The Armorer Artificer in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition (D&D 5e) transforms a suit of armor into a magical extension of themselves. Whether you want to be a mystical tank or stealthy arcane operative, the Armorer gives you a customizable suit of infused armor that enhances your combat and magical abilities. If you’ve ever dreamed of playing a magical Iron Man, this subclass is for you.

Why Play an Armorer?

  • Highly Customizable: Choose between Guardian (defensive melee) and Infiltrator (stealthy ranged) armor modes.
  • Magic & Armor Synergy: Cast spells while wearing heavy armor and use your armor as a spell focus.
  • Tough but Flexible: Excellent for players who want high durability without sacrificing spellcasting.
  • Thematic Roleplay: Be a runic knight, a stealthy arcane agent, or a steampunk-inspired inventor.

If you want a subclass that can tank, fight, sneak, or support, while looking incredibly cool, the Armorer is for you.

Core Features of the Armorer

Here are the core class features that define the Armorer:

Arcane Armor

At 3rd level, you can bond a suit of armor to yourself. It becomes impossible to remove and replaces missing limbs, integrating completely with your body. It also allows you to cast spells using the armor as your focus.

Armor Model

Choose one of two options:

  • Guardian: Get Thunder Gauntlets (magical melee weapons that taunt enemies) and boost survivability.
  • Infiltrator: Gain a Lightning Launcher and stealth-enhancing armor that doesn’t impose disadvantage.

Extra Attack

At level 5, you can attack twice per turn, a big boost for melee or ranged builds.

Armor Modifications

Your armor gains more infusion slots, letting you stack magical upgrades for powerful combinations.

Perfected Armor

At 15th level, Guardian mode damages enemies that hit you, and Infiltrator mode adds extra lightning damage to every hit.

Best Ability Scores for Armorers

  • Intelligence (Top Priority): Powers your spells and determines your subclass features.
  • Constitution (Very Important): Keeps you alive and helps with concentration.
  • Strength or Dexterity: Depending on whether you choose Guardian (Strength) or Infiltrator (Dexterity).

Best Races for an Armorer

  • Warforged: Practically built for this subclass—integrated protection and resistances fit perfectly.
  • Mountain Dwarf: Strong and tough, great for Guardian-style armor builds.
  • Human (Variant): Gain early access to important feats like War Caster or Sentinel.
  • Half-Elf: Flexible stat bonuses and solid all-around performance.

Playing as an Armorer

Your Role in the Party

You’re a frontline fighter or tactical skirmisher who also brings magical utility and support to the table. Depending on your armor model, you’ll either absorb damage up close or hit hard from range with stealth.

  • Decide early between Guardian or Infiltrator, build your stats and infusions around that playstyle.
  • Use infusions like Enhanced Defense and Repulsion Shield to turn your armor into a magical fortress.
  • Don’t forget spells! You have solid support options like ShieldMirror Image, and Web.
  • Keep your allies close in Guardian mode—they’ll benefit from your defensive presence.

Last note, I promise. In the recommended ability scores section you state the following, “Strength or Dexterity: Depending on whether you choose Guardian (Strength) or Infiltrator (Dexterity).” The Guardian armor makes it so that strength isn’t a factor, allowing us to buck the Strength requirement that comes with wearing heavy armor. You can also use intelligence for the thunder gauntlets instead of strength. However, if Strength is a must, and the adventurer has some patience, the Artificer’s infusion, Replicate item, could get you the fix you need while still dumping strength. At level 10 the Gauntlets of Ogre Power can be replicated for a statict 19 in Strength. Further along a 14 you have ablr to replicate the Belt of Hill Giant Strength, for a 21 in Strength. For the Guardian armor model, Dex should probably best serve as a tertiary focus, after Intelligence and Constitution. For the Infiltrator model, it could be a secondary focus.

That’s it was it. Some friendly advice. Cheers and good luck!

Nothing crazy, but in the multiclassing section the first bullet point reads, “A level in Fighter gives you Action Surge, great for burst turns.” However, you would need two levels in fighter in orders to get the action surge feature (Three if you were using the 2024 rules, which it doesn’t appear that you are.).

On a somewhat related note, a level dip in wizard gets the spell Shield, which the armorer doesn’t have access to. An additional level can get you great Wizard class traits, like the Divination Wizard’s portent rolls, or the War Wizard’s Tactical Wit.

What separates the Armorer from other artificers are the infusions. The armorer gets more than its counter subclasses. This allows it to have two more infusions, provided two are used on your character. Add the fact that artificers get more attunement slots for magic items and well, let’s just say the shenanigans you get up to ar limited to your imagination.

Also, great article. Hope to see more of these. Cheers.
