Soulknife Rogue Guide for Beginners: Mastering the Psionic Assassin in D&D 5e

The Soulknife Rogue is a stealthy Dungeons & Dragons character who creates psychic blades, communicates telepathically, and uses psionic energy to improve important skill checks. First introduced in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, the subclass was updated in the 2024 Player's Handbook, the ruleset labeled D&D 5.5e in 2026.
Soulknives suit players who enjoy scouting, problem-solving, and precise damage without visible weapons.
Why Play a Soulknife Rogue?
Key Benefits
- Psychic and telepathic abilities: Coordinate with allies without speaking aloud.
- Reliable skills: Psi-Bolstered Knack can turn a failed proficient skill or tool check into a success.
- Concealable weapons: Manifest Psychic Blades when attacking rather than carrying them openly.
- Flexible combat: Make ranged or melee attacks, and eventually teleport or improve missed attacks.
- Strong teamwork: Scout ahead while staying in contact with the party.
Soulknives shine during infiltration and investigation, but they are not automatically invisible or undetectable.
Core Features
Key Mechanics and Abilities
Psionic Power (Level 3)
Psionic Energy Dice power several subclass features. Under the current rules, you begin with four d6s at Rogue level 3. The pool grows to six d8s at level 5, eight d8s at level 9, eight d10s at level 11, ten d10s at level 13, and twelve d12s at level 17. You regain one expended die after a Short Rest and all expended dice after a Long Rest.
- Psi-Bolstered Knack: After failing an ability check using a skill or tool you're proficient with, add a Psionic Energy Die. You expend the die only if the bonus turns failure into success.
- Psychic Whispers: As a Magic action, establish telepathic communication with up to your Proficiency Bonus in creatures you can see. Roll a Psionic Energy Die to determine the connection's duration in hours. Participants can communicate with you from up to 1 mile away. Your first use after a Long Rest doesn't expend the die.
Psychic Blades (Level 3)
- Create a Psychic Blade in a free hand when taking the Attack action or making an Opportunity Attack.
- The blade deals 1d6 psychic damage plus your attack ability modifier, has Finesse, and can be thrown up to 60 feet normally or 120 feet with Disadvantage.
- It has the Vex mastery property, helping your next attack against the same target after a hit.
- After attacking with it on your turn, you can attack with a second blade as a Bonus Action if your other hand is free. That blade uses a d4 for damage.
Blades vanish after attacking and leave no damage marks. They do not ignore Armor Class or guarantee surprise, but can qualify for Sneak Attack.
Soul Blades (Level 9)
- Homing Strikes: After missing with a Psychic Blade, add a Psionic Energy Die to the attack roll. The die is expended only if the attack becomes a hit.
- Psychic Teleportation: Spend a Bonus Action and one Psionic Energy Die to teleport to a visible, unoccupied space up to 10 times the die result in feet away.
Psychic Veil (Level 13)
As a Magic action, become Invisible for up to 1 hour without Concentration. The effect ends early if you damage a creature or force a saving throw. You get one use per Long Rest; spending a Psionic Energy Die can restore another use.
Rend Mind (Level 17)
When your Psychic Blades deal Sneak Attack damage, you can force a Wisdom saving throw. Failure leaves the target Stunned for up to 1 minute, with another save at the end of each of its turns. The DC equals 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your Proficiency Bonus. After one use, you need a Long Rest or must expend three Psionic Energy Dice to use it again.
Suggested Ability Scores
- Primary: Dexterity. Improves Psychic Blade attacks, Armor Class, initiative, and Stealth. It also sets your Rend Mind save DC.
- Secondary: Constitution. Helps you survive when enemies reach you.
- Useful: Wisdom. Supports Perception and Insight. Intelligence suits an investigator but is not required for Soulknife powers.
Recommended Species
In the updated rules, backgrounds determine ability score increases. Consider these species:
- Elf (Drow): Darkvision and magic suit an undercover scout.
- Shadar-Kai: Teleportation offers another escape option if your DM permits this earlier-book species.
- Githzerai: Psionic-themed magic fits the subclass's story.
- Kenku: Mimicry and skill-focused traits suit an infiltrator.
- Changeling: Shapechanging supports disguise-based adventures.
Ask your DM about species from older books.
Playing as a Soulknife Rogue
Role in a Party
- Scout: Use Stealth, Perception, and Psychic Whispers to report what you discover.
- Precise striker: Land Sneak Attack damage using positioning, Advantage, or an ally beside your target.
- Problem solver: Apply Expertise and Psi-Bolstered Knack to locks, investigations, and tricky conversations.
Beginner-Friendly Build Example
Aim for Dexterity 16 or 17, Constitution 14, and reasonable Wisdom. Choose Stealth, Perception, and Sleight of Hand, taking Expertise in Stealth and another favorite skill. At level 3, use Psychic Whispers when scouting. At level 4, improve Dexterity. At level 5, consider Cunning Strike options like Trip or Withdraw, which trade some Sneak Attack damage for control or movement.
Tips for New Players
- Plan your Bonus Action: Your second Psychic Blade attack competes with Cunning Action, Steady Aim, and later Psychic Teleportation.
- Know when Sneak Attack applies: Advantage works, but an active ally within 5 feet of the enemy can also enable it when you don't have Disadvantage.
- Save dice wisely: Psychic Blades don't consume Psionic Energy Dice by themselves. Save your pool for features that need it.
- Keep cover in mind: Telepathy and disappearing weapons don't automatically make you hidden.
Remarkable Shops & Their Wares offers locations and shopkeepers a DM can use for investigations, secret meetings, and stealth challenges.
Gear and Dice Recommendations
Suggested Equipment
Weapons
- Psychic Blades: Your main weapon needs no physical storage. Carry a backup weapon for situations where a different damage type or ordinary tool is useful.
Armor
- Studded Leather Armor: Good protection for a Dexterity-based Rogue without imposing Disadvantage on Stealth.
- Cloak of Protection: A magic item that improves AC and saving throws if your DM makes one available.
Magic Items
- Amulet of Health: Sets Constitution to 19 while worn, improving durability if your score is lower.
- Ring of Mind Shielding: Helps guard against magical mind-reading and unwanted telepathic intrusion.
Dice Recommendations from Runic Dice
These three dice sets suit different Soulknife themes:
- Mindblade Dice Set: For a glowing blue and silver combination symbolizing psionic weapons, consider the Blue Sandstone Silver Font Gemstone DND Dice Set. This set features deep blue sandstone with shimmering inclusions, complemented by silver numerals, capturing the essence of a mindblade's ethereal weaponry.
- Ethereal Assassin Dice Set: To embody a psychic killer with dark purple and black tones, the Purple Gemstone Amethyst DND Dice Set is an excellent choice. Handcrafted from genuine amethyst, these dice showcase deep purple hues, reflecting the enigmatic presence of an ethereal assassin.
- Voidwalker Dice Set: For cosmic hues representing mental transcendence, the Black Inked Lightning Cracked Glass DND Dice Set offers a striking cracked glass design with black inked numerals, symbolizing the mysterious journey of a voidwalker traversing the planes of existence.
Advanced Tips and Tricks
Optimization Strategies
Best Feats for a Soulknife Rogue
- Telekinetic: Adds psionic flavor and battlefield positioning, but its Bonus Action can compete with your other abilities.
- Lucky: Improves crucial rolls and is available as an Origin feat in the updated rules.
- Shadow Touched: Adds Invisibility and another spell for infiltration.
- Speedy: Improves movement and helps you avoid Opportunity Attacks. It fills a similar role to the older Mobile feat.
- Resilient (Wisdom): Helpful in some campaigns, but less valuable if you plan to reach Rogue level 15, when Slippery Mind grants Wisdom saving throw proficiency.
Best Multiclass Options
1. Rogue 5 / Great Old One Warlock 15 – The Psychic Nightmare
- Best for: Mixing stealth with psychic-themed spellcasting. You'll need the ability scores required for multiclassing, and fewer Rogue levels mean less Sneak Attack damage.
2. Rogue 6 / Psi Warrior Fighter 14 – The Psionic Gladiator
- Best for: Combining Fighter durability and martial features with a Rogue's skills. Watch how your action economy works with psychic attacks.
3. Rogue 10 / Divination Wizard 10 – The Future Seer
- Best for: Pairing the Wizard's Portent feature and spells with Soul Blades, at the cost of later Rogue features.
For beginners, a single-class Soulknife is simpler and keeps Psychic Veil and Rend Mind within reach. Choose targets carefully, communicate, and save psionic dice for crucial moments.
